One night, Caliph Omar ibn Al-Khattab was patrolling the streets of Medina when he heard the cries of children coming from a tent. He approached and saw a woman boiling a pot of water with stones in it. When he asked why, she replied: "I am trying to comfort my children with the hope of food. We have nothing to eat, and they are hungry."
Omar was deeply moved. He rushed to the treasury, took a sack of flour, oil, and other provisions, and carried it on his own back. His servant offered to carry it, but Omar refused, saying: "Will you carry my burden on the Day of Judgment?"
He personally cooked for the family and watched the children eat before leaving.
